Congratulations to Chia-Wei Lin (林家瑋), a young Taiwanese guitarist. Olive Tree Guitar Ensemble has recommended Chia-Wei Lin to get full scholarships sponsered by CEO Liao this year. Mr. Gulas specializes in handmade artistic works related to leather, drifting wood and aboriginal dresses. This is his first experiment to create this unique guitar-shape artistic work made by ratan.

First Guitar Concert Performed by Taiwanese (1940)

In the picture above, the first guitar concert performed by Taiwanese was held in 1940. During those times, it was very rare to sing at concert accompanied by guitar ensemble around the world. Mr Hu (胡樹琳), the first Taiwanese guitar teacher, was the 1st guitar of this ensemble.

The first guitar ensemble in Taiwan took a picure after the concert. Taiwan was still under Japanese rule in 1940.

First batch of guitars made in Taiwan were copied from these guitars, important historical meaning of guitar development.

Nowadays, guitar making industry is thriving in Taiwan. To know the first hand-mand guitar made by Taiwanese is very important to music development here. In the picture above, the first guitar made by Taiwanese date back to 1940's. This guitar is important to guitar development of Taiwan.

Around 60 years ago, the value of guitar was equal to a house during that period of time. Picture above is the oldest guitar in Taiwan, made in Mexico around 1930's, has been well preserved until now.

Dr. Martin Chien's (簡英材博士) CD is nearly finished and going to be published recently.
Information about Dr. Chien:
Dr. Chien recieved a Doctor of Musical Arts at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is adjunct professor of church music at Taiwan Theological Seminary, Chinese Evangelical Seminary, and Christ's College in Taiwan ,and advisor of Decca Records. He was honored with the Music Achievement Award at Dixon Music School. After serving for 10 years in the US, he returned to Taiwan and served as chief executive of church music organizations and pastor of music/worship. Unique in blending classical and contemporary music styles, he is sought after as a dynamic and progressive speaker. His life goal is to help Chinese Christians in the spiritual renewal and actualization of music ministry. Publications: "It's Jesus", "Your Love", "Praise Thee O Lord", "Listen to My Heart".
Thanks to Dr. Chien for giving us precious opportunities to experience two songs on CD.

The relationship between development of guitar and World War II in Taiwan

Thanks for providing this precious historical data by Hu Shu-lin Guitar Reseach Center. Hu Shu-lin is the first guitar teacher in Taiwan, and it's a paper well recorded number of students from 1936 to 1954. What is the relationship between development of guitar and World War II in Taiwan during these 20 years? Here we proposed three interesting questions to discuss about this topic.
1. Why the number of students decreased in 1942 ?
2. What happened between 1945 to 1949? It seems there's no student during this period of time.
3. Why the number of students increase after 1953 and dropped again next year ?

After Hu Shu-lin, the first guitar teacher in Taiwan, taught the first student guitar. It took him 20 years to pubish the first guitar periodical in Taiwan (around 1955). This song is called Wang Chao-chun (王昭君) and was re-arranged by Hu Shu-lin. Afterwards, many guitarists played this re-arranged version of song in several concerts.

Stephan Lin (林宏達老師) serves concurrently as Music Director & Conductor of Olive Tree Guitar Ensemble.

1988~1995/

Served as the conductor of several choirs. He had conducted hundreds of performances during this period of time in Taiwan.

1989/

Majored in music and guitar performance at Taiwan Theological College and Seminary. (台灣神學院)

From 1992/

Mr. Lin have led concert of Taichung First Senior High School Guitar Ensemble each year since 1992.

1993/
Conducted the performance of Guitar Ensemble with choir, tenor and soprano.

2001/

Established Olive Tree Guitar Ensemble.

2002/

Mr. Lin conducted Olive Tree Guitar Ensemble with clarinet, flute, Low Chinese Bamboo flute, Basson, harp, digital piano, drum, etc…, and formed Olive Tree Guitar Orchestra. (First Chinese Guitar Orchestra)

2003~2004/

Conducted concert of "The Splendid Sound of 40 Guitars". (40把吉他的光燦樂響)

2004/

Elected as chief executive officer of Taiwan Guitar Society.(台灣吉他學會)

2005/

Conducted Taiwan Guitar Orchestra, more than one hundred members, at National Concert Hall(Taipei), Kaohsiung Municipal Music Hall and Hsin Ming Art Cencer (Taichung).

2005/

Conducted Concierto de Aranjuez at concert "The Night of Guitar Concertos". International guitarists from Japan, Korea and other countries also performed in this concert.

2006/

Conducted Olive Tree Guitar Orchestra, the first Chinese guitar orchestra, at concert "The Night of Traditional Taiwanese Folk Songs"

2007/

Assisted the establishement of "National Taichung First Senior High school Guitar Orchestra", the first guitar orchestra among senior high schools in Taiwan.
